Sikkim Cricket Team History
Sikkim’s cricket journey began not on a grand stage, but with a love for the game. Early signs of cricketing passion emerged in the form of friendly matches played amongst students at boarding schools, central government employees, and army personnel stationed in Sikkim. The 1970s saw the organization of the first cricket tournament in the state, the “Snow Lion Cup,” followed by other local tournaments in the 1980s.
Officially, the Sikkim Cricket Association (SCA) took shape in 1987, laying the groundwork for organized cricket in the state. Their dedication received a boost in 1990-91 when Sikkim was granted Associate Member status by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). This opened doors for Sikkim’s young talents to participate in national tournaments.
1994 marked a significant milestone with Sikkim’s first junior team (Under-19) competing in the Cooch Behar Trophy. They continued to participate in various junior tournaments, showcasing their skills against teams from the East Zone.
Sikkim’s cricketing aspirations reached new heights in July 2018. The BCCI named Sikkim as one of nine new teams to compete in domestic tournaments, including the prestigious Ranji Trophy and the Vijay Hazare Trophy. However, initial challenges arose due to the lack of a ground meeting first-class cricket standards.
Despite the hurdle, Sikkim entered the 2018-19 Vijay Hazare Trophy with a team comprising entirely of homegrown players. Their debut season was a commendable one, securing the fifth position in the table with four wins out of eight matches.
The team continued to strive for improvement, although the 2018-19 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy saw them placed last in their group. Sikkim’s fighting spirit remains strong, and they continue to work towards achieving cricketing excellence.
Sikkim’s cricket history is a testament to the dedication of its players, administrators, and fans. From humble beginnings to competing at the national level, Sikkim’s cricket journey is one of passion, perseverance, and the pursuit of cricketing glory.
