Pakistan has announced their squad for the first Test against England at home, which includes the return of left-arm spinner Noman Ali and fast-bowling allrounder Aamer Jamal. Noman Ali, a veteran of 15 Tests with 47 wickets, last played for Pakistan in July 2023. Aamer Jamal, who has dealt with back issues, impressed during Pakistan’s tour of Australia last year but hasn’t played red-ball cricket since. However, he recently made a comeback in the Champions Cup, earning his spot back in the squad. Khurram Shahzad’s injury opened the door for Jamal’s return.
The selectors decided to omit Kamran Ghulam and Mohammad Ali from the 17-man squad that was picked for the series against Bangladesh. In their statement, the selectors clarified that both players remain in their future plans. However, they emphasized that the selection policy focuses on consistency and continuity, and that a 15-man squad is sufficient for the Test series. Kamran and Mohammad Ali were encouraged to continue playing in domestic competitions like the Champions One-Day Cup and the President’s Cup.
Pakistan squad for the first Test:
Shan Masood (C), Saud Shakeel (VC), Aamer Jamal, Abdullah Shafique, Abrar Ahmed, Babar Azam, Mir Hamza, Mohammad Huraira, Mohammad Rizwan (WK), Naseem Shah, Noman Ali, Saim Ayub, Salman Ali Agha, Sarfaraz Ahmed (WK), Shaheen Shah Afridi.
The players selected for the series have been withdrawn from the Champions One-Day Cup playoffs to ensure they get sufficient rest before the Test series, following head coach Jason Gillespie’s recommendation. Gillespie explained, “With a busy domestic and international cricket schedule, it makes sense to give our players some much-needed rest ahead of the Test series against England.” He added that the team is eager to face England at home and play in front of their passionate supporters.
The squad will gather in Multan on September 30, with a training camp scheduled to begin on October 1. The first Test is set to start on October 7.
