Mizoram Cricket Team History
Cricket has been played in Mizoram since the 1970s, but it was a grassroots affair managed by local clubs. Back then, government officials would gather for friendly matches on Sundays. Teams from organizations like Vijaya Bank, CRPF, and Assam Rifles also participated.
The Cricket Association of Mizoram (CAM) was officially formed in 1992. Despite limited resources, the CAM organized tournaments with funds from the Mizoram State Sports Council and cricket enthusiasts. Interestingly, Mizoram pioneered a unique “MCL” tournament, featuring an IPL-style auction system for teams and players broadcasted live on local TV.
A Long Road to Recognition
Obtaining recognition from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) proved to be a challenge. The CAM persistently applied for BCCI membership but faced hurdles. Notably, Mizoram was the only state in the northeast without BCCI associate status before 2018.
A turning point came in 2018 with the Lodha Committee reforms advocating “One State, One Vote.” This reform aimed to include all states in the domestic circuit. However, the BCCI initially disregarded these reforms. After a legal battle, Mizoram finally received full BCCI membership in July 2018, paving the way for its debut in the 2018-19 season.
Entering the National Arena
The 2018-19 season marked a historic moment for Mizoram cricket. The team was included in prestigious tournaments like the Ranji Trophy (first-class) and the Vijay Hazare Trophy (List A). Their debut, however, was met with challenges. The Telangana Cricket Association questioned their inclusion, arguing for qualification criteria.
Despite the controversy, Mizoram took the field with determination. Their opening match in the Ranji Trophy resulted in a heavy defeat against Nagaland. It was the biggest loss for a debuting team in the tournament’s history. The initial seasons were a learning experience as Mizoram finished last in their respective groups.
