Karishma Ramharack Leads West Indies to Crucial Victory

West Indies Women secured their second victory in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, defeating Bangladesh Women by 8 wickets. The standout performance came from offspinner Karishma Ramharack, who took 4 wickets, limiting Bangladesh to a modest total of 103. West Indies chased down the target comfortably with 8 wickets and 7.1 overs to spare.

After being put in to bat, Bangladesh struggled in the PowerPlay, managing only 33 runs and losing both openers. The slow Sharjah surface worked in favor of West Indies, whose spinners took control early. Ramharack made an immediate impact, dismissing Shathi Rani with her first ball through a sharp stumping by Shemaine Campbelle. A few overs later, she bowled Dilara Akter, further stifling Bangladesh’s progress.

Skipper Nigar Sultana and Shobhana Mostary stabilized the innings with a 40-run partnership, with Sultana hitting three boundaries off Afy Fletcher in one over. However, West Indies struck back, with Campbelle stumping Mostary to give Ramharack her third wicket. Fletcher added to Bangladesh’s woes, taking two wickets in consecutive deliveries, which crippled their middle order. Ramharack then picked up her fourth wicket, dismissing Ritu Moni to prevent any late resurgence. Sultana’s 39 helped Bangladesh cross the 100-run mark before she fell in the final over to Hayley Matthews.

Chasing 104, West Indies made a strong start. Hayley Matthews dominated the Bangladesh bowlers, hitting six boundaries inside the PowerPlay. Alongside Stafanie Taylor, who battled through a niggle, the openers put on a 52-run stand. Matthews was bowled for 34 by pacer Marufa Akter, but West Indies were well on their way to victory. Taylor retired hurt on 27, but Deandra Dottin finished the chase in style with two sixes, giving West Indies a comfortable win and boosting their net run rate.
