India all out for 46 runs in 1st Test against New Zealand, lowest total on home ground

India all out for 46 runs in the first innings of the 1st Test match against New Zealand on Day 2 on October 17 at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

New Zealand took a lead of 134 after fast bowlers Matt Henry (32) and William O’Rourke (23) combined to devastating effect to dismiss India for 46 in the weather-affected first Test on Thursday.
Opener Devon Conway reached 91 before being bowled while attempting a reverse sweep to off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin on a dramatic second day in Bengaluru.

New Zealand were 180-3 at stumps with Rachin Ravindra on 22 and Daryl Mitchell on 14 when bad light halted play in an extended session.

India were dismissed in 31.2 overs in the second session after they elected to bat in overcast conditions. The opening day of the Test, the first of a three-match series, was called off.

It was India’s third-lowest Test score in history and its lowest on its home turf. His previous home record was 75 against the West Indies in New Delhi in 1987.

His lowest overall record is 36 against Australia in a pink-ball Adelaide Test in 2020.

New Zealand launched a thumping reply. Conway scored 67 runs for the first wicket with new captain Tom Latham making 15.

The left-handed Conway took on the Indian attack and handled the bowlers with aplomb as he reached 50 off 54 balls with a six off Ashwin.

Kuldeep Yadav struck the next ball to send Latham back with his left-arm wrist spin. India successfully reviewed the decision in their favour after the umpire rejected the appeal.

Conway put on a partnership of 75 with Will Young, who scored 33 and replaced the injured Kane Williamson.

Young fell to Ravindra Jadeja before Indian wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant missed a stumping and in turn injured his knee and limped off the ground.

Dhruv Jurel came in as a stand-in wicketkeeper.

Earlier, Pant had top-scored with 20 in a disastrous Indian innings that saw five ducks, including that of star batsman Virat Kohli.

Henry closed the innings with five wickets, and his final strike to Kuldeep was his 100th Test wicket.

Tim Southee struck first in the seventh over with the score on nine, knocking India captain Rohit Sharma through the gate with a sharp inswinger after he had made two.

O’Rourke struck in his first over to catch Kohli at leg gully without adding anything to the score, silencing a stunned home crowd.

There was a brief rain interruption, but there was no respite for India as the bowlers returned as the war-shocked hosts fell to 33-5, and then 34-6 at lunch.

Wickets continued to fall and shortly after lunch O’Rourke (4-22) and Henry (5-15) dismissed the remaining four batsmen, helped by some big catches.
