Delhi name Sarandeep Singh as new head coach, Wassan mentor of white-ball squads

Sarandeep Singh, a former India offspinner, has taken on the role of head coach for Delhi’s senior men’s cricket team ahead of the domestic season. He secured the position over former Delhi batter KP Bhaskar, who was also in contention.

Although Bhaskar missed out on the coaching role, he will serve as part of a three-member selection committee led by Gursharan Singh. The committee also includes former Delhi wicketkeeper Rajiv Vinayak.

Sarandeep, who once held a position as a national selector, succeeds Devang Gandhi as coach. Gandhi had been involved with both senior and junior teams last season but opted not to extend his tenure due to personal reasons.

The Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA) has also brought in two mentors for the squad. Former India fast bowler Atul Wassan will oversee the white-ball teams, while Robin Singh Junior will guide the red-ball side.

In women’s cricket, Reema Malhotra, a former India allrounder, has been appointed as mentor for Delhi’s women’s team.

Delhi came close to reaching the knockout stage in the 2023-24 Ranji Trophy, finishing third in Group D with three wins, two draws, and two losses from seven matches. They made it to the semi-finals of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy but were eliminated by eventual champions Punjab. In the Vijay Hazare Trophy, Delhi placed fourth in their group of eight teams.
