In a dramatic UEFA Europa League (UEL) clash, Bodo/Glimt snatched a vital 2-1 victory over Braga at the Estadio Municipal de Braga, with Villads Nielsen scoring a decisive goal in the dying moments. This result secured all three points for the Norwegian side, leaving their Portuguese counterparts reeling, particularly given Braga’s recent home struggles in European competition. Having lost five of their previous six home fixtures, Braga entered the match under pressure, while Bodo/Glimt’s earlier 3-2 triumph over Porto gave them a boost of confidence.
Despite Braga’s poor European home form, they were the side that started more brightly. Early in the game, winger Roger Fernandes tested Bodo/Glimt goalkeeper Nikita Khaikin on two occasions, launching ambitious efforts from outside the box. However, Khaikin was alert and managed to parry both shots away from danger. On the other end, Philip Zinckernagel proved to be a consistent threat for the visitors, though his finishing initially left much to be desired. His most notable attempt came just before half-time when his well-struck free kick rattled the crossbar, nearly giving Bodo/Glimt the lead.
The first half ended goalless, with both sides having their moments but failing to break through. As the teams went into the break, neither could be too dissatisfied with a 0-0 scoreline, knowing that the match was still there for the taking.
Ten minutes into the second half, the game finally opened up, courtesy of some individual brilliance from Hakon Evjen. After a loose ball fell to him on the edge of the box, Evjen cleverly flicked the ball past a Braga defender before drilling a low shot into the bottom corner, giving Bodo/Glimt the lead. The strike was a testament to Evjen’s sharp technical ability and composure in front of goal.
Braga, desperate for an equalizer, continued to rely on the lively Fernandes, who once again came close, curling a shot from distance that was brilliantly saved by Khaikin. As Braga pushed forward, Bodo/Glimt sought to catch them on the break, with Zinckernagel again in a promising position, but his hesitation in front of goal allowed Braga goalkeeper Matheus to smother the danger.
Braga eventually found their equalizer, but it came in an unexpected fashion. Bruma’s shot was saved by Khaikin, but the rebound fell kindly to defender Sikou Niakate, who slotted home to make it 1-1. Unfortunately for Niakate, his fortunes quickly took a turn for the worse. Just minutes after scoring, he received a yellow card for a foul, and shortly afterward, he was sent off for a second bookable offense after hauling down Sondre Brunstad Fet, leaving Braga to play the remaining 20 minutes with ten men.
Despite their numerical advantage, Bodo/Glimt struggled to dominate the closing stages of the match. Both sides had opportunities, but it seemed as though the game would end in a stalemate. However, deep into stoppage time, Nielsen rose to the occasion. With the final kick of the game, he met Patrick Berg’s corner with a deft flick, sending the ball past Matheus and sparking wild celebrations among the traveling Bodo/Glimt fans. It was Nielsen’s first goal for the club, and it couldn’t have come at a more opportune moment.
This victory leaves Bodo/Glimt in an enviable position, sitting on seven points after three matchdays and extending their unbeaten run in all competitions to 19 games. Braga, on the other hand, are left with just three points and now face an uphill battle to secure qualification for the knockout stages.
Nikita Khaikin, the Bodo/Glimt goalkeeper, was named Man of the Match for his crucial saves, particularly those that kept Braga at bay in the first half. His performance was pivotal in ensuring his side stayed in contention throughout the match.
