Australia today announced strong 14-member squad for ODI series against Pakistan in November 2024. Pat Cummins has been named captain for ODI series against Pakistan in November at Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Australia’s Captain Pat Cummins missed the recent ODI series against England which is Australia won by 3-2.
Australia captain Pat Cummins will gear up for the upcoming Test summer by leading the ODI series against Pakistan. However, both Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head will be absent from the three-match series as they take paternity leave.
Cummins is unlikely to play in a Sheffield Shield match before the five-Test series against India, as he focuses on preparing through 50-over cricket. He is scheduled to play a domestic one-day match for New South Wales on October 25, just before captaining the first ODI.
It’s unclear if Cummins will participate in all three ODIs against Pakistan, particularly with only a one-day break between the second and third matches in Adelaide and Perth, along with a significant flight in between. Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc have also been named in the ODI squad, but it’s probable that the bowling lineup will be rotated, as both are looking to play at least one Shield match prior to the ODIs.
Marcus Stoinis makes his ODI return after not playing since the 2023 World Cup. He was absent from the ODI segment of the UK tour but participated in T20Is against Scotland and England. While currently without a state or CA contract, he is close to qualifying for an upgrade and aims to play a vital role in the Champions Trophy, especially with Green sidelined due to injury.
Josh Inglis is the sole wicketkeeper in the squad, as Alex Carey has been omitted despite strong performances. With Head and Marsh unavailable, a new opening partnership of Matthew Short and Jake Fraser-McGurk is anticipated, with Short having impressed in the UK.
Cooper Connolly, who debuted in England, is named in both the ODI and Australia A squads, likely participating in the first A match before joining the ODI team.
Australia has yet to announce the T20I squad for the series against Pakistan from November 14 to 18. With Test players resting for the first Test starting November 22, a new T20I captain and coaching staff will need to be appointed.
