In a hard-fought match, Athletic Club ended the night with a 1-1 draw against Real Betis at the Estadio San Mamés. Although the result was disappointing for Athletic, they maintained an impressive record, with just one loss in their last 25 La Liga home games (15 wins, 9 draws).
Athletic came into the match hoping to achieve two consecutive league wins, something they hadn’t managed since February. They had a golden opportunity to take the lead only six minutes into the game, but Nico Williams missed, sending the ball high over the bar. Moments later, the hosts came close again when Oihan Sancet hit the post after a skillful move in front of goal. Not long after, Iñaki Williams tried his luck with a curling shot from the left, which also struck the post, leaving the fans in suspense.
The woodwork continued to frustrate Athletic as they nearly scored again just before halftime. This time, Aitor Paredes’ header glanced off the post, denying them yet another chance to break the deadlock. Real Betis, who historically struggled at San Mamés, seemed fortunate to reach the break on level terms, as they had lost nine of their last ten games at this stadium.
Despite Athletic’s dominance, Betis unexpectedly opened the scoring in the 52nd minute. Pablo Fornals found space in the box, firing a low shot that beat Athletic’s goalkeeper, Julen Agirrezabala, to put Betis ahead. Betis almost doubled their lead when Iker Losada took a close-range shot, but Agirrezabala made a crucial save at the near post to keep his team in the game.
Shortly after that missed opportunity for Betis, Athletic struck back. Substitute Álex Berenguer made an immediate impact, heading in a precise cross from Óscar de Marcos to bring Athletic level. This equalizer energized Athletic, and they pushed forward with more intensity. Ander Herrera, another substitute, nearly scored as well but was thwarted by two saves from Betis’ goalkeeper, Rui Silva.
Athletic dominated much of the game, creating numerous chances and hitting the post three times. Yet, despite their attacking efforts, they had to settle for a draw. This result keeps them in sixth place in the La Liga standings, tied in points with seventh-placed Betis.
Both teams now shift their focus to European competitions. Athletic Club is preparing for their UEFA Europa League clash against PFC Ludogorets, while Betis will face NK Celje in the UEFA Conference League.
