The Serie A clash between Bologna and AC Milan, scheduled for Saturday, has been delayed following severe rainfall and flooding in the area, the league confirmed on Friday. League officials and club representatives convened to explore alternative options after Bologna’s mayor, Matteo Lepore, initially announced the game’s suspension.
Efforts to hold the match in Bologna without fans or at a neutral venue were unsuccessful, with no consensus on a feasible solution. Consequently, the fixture will be rescheduled, with the new date still pending.
AC Milan chairman Paolo Scaroni expressed frustration, remarking that the mayor’s decision to prohibit even a behind-closed-doors match was perplexing.
In response to the extreme weather since October 19, which led to landslides, floods, road closures, and power interruptions across the region, the mayor also ordered local schools, parks, and sports facilities to remain closed on Friday.
A statement from Bologna’s municipality highlighted that the game would attract around 35,000 spectators to an already vulnerable area, complicating fan management and traffic control.
With both teams competing in the Champions League, rescheduling the match presents a challenge. Milan will now face Napoli on Tuesday without Theo Hernandez and Tijjani Reijnders, who were due to serve suspensions against Bologna but will instead miss the upcoming fixture.
